| 1) Yellow-crowned Night Heron While working at the EcoScape in
the spring of 2000, Dr. Wayne Shew, a botanist at BSC, found a nest that held
Yellow-crowned Night Herons. This discovery was a bit unusual since Yellow-crowned Night
Herons nest fairly close to water. Village Creek is just a few short miles as the crow
flies to the west. They are called night herons because they feed at night. Usually they
will fly into fields looking for mice, snakes, and lizards.
Look for them in the EcoScape late in the day or night. They will usually stand around
the edge of the field waiting for a rodent to appear. |
